Chapter Bylaws

1. The Southern California Chapter of the Society for Ethnomusicology shall include members from the southern region of the state, extending from San Luis Obispo to San Diego, and including the state of Hawai'i.

2. The SEMSCHC Executive Board shall include a President, Vice President, Secretary-Treasurer, Web Editor(s), and two Student Representatives, all elected at the annual meeting. The Vice President shall be elected in even years, and shall become President after serving two years as Vice President. The Treasurer shall be elected in odd years, and shall serve a term of two years. The Web editor(s) shall serve a term of three years, with an election held the year that the previous term ends. In the event that two co-editors are elected, each shall serve concurrently. Student Representatives shall each serve a two-year term, staggered for election in alternate years. Chapter officers must be members of SEM in good standing and shall provide annual reports to be presented at the Annual Meeting and then sent to the SEM Chapter Coordinator.

3. The Secretary-Treasurer will provide minutes of the General Membership meeting and will maintain a bank account for the Chapter. The current President of the Chapter shall be the designated beneficiary of the Chapter's bank account.

4. Student Representatives shall be elected by student members at the annual meeting for staggered terms of two years (one during an odd year and one during an even year). The Student Representatives shall attend board meetings and be voting members of the Executive Board. Student Representatives must be student members of SEM in good standing. If a student election is not feasible, the Chapter President shall appoint a Student Representative for that year. Student Representatives should be available to personally attend the annual chapter conference at least once during their term. Student representatives are encouraged to organize student activities, such as proposals for panels, workshops, or performances at the annual chapter meeting. Student Representatives shall serve on the programming committee during the second year of their term.

5. The President will appoint a chapter member as the Program Chair for the annual meeting and the Program Chair shall appoint a committee of at least four members to plan the annual meeting. The Vice President will serve as the Ki Mantle Hood Student Prize Committee Chair and the President shall appoint two members to the Prize Committee according to the criteria set forth in the prize procedures (see Ki Mantle Hood Student Prize Guidelines). The Program Chair shall appoint a committee of at least four members to plan the annual meeting. The Vice President will serve as the Ki Mantle Hood Student Prize Committee Chair and the President shall appoint two members to the Prize Committee according to the criteria set forth in the prize procedures (see Ki Mantle Hood Student Prize Guidelines).

6. The Local Arrangements Chair for the following year's meeting shall be selected at the annual meeting. Alternate sites for the following year and tentative sites for future years shall also be suggested at that time.

7. Annual meeting registration fees will be determined by the Local Arrangements Chair, in consultation with the chapter officers. Non-student members should pay a higher registration fee than student members.

8. Presence is required at the conference to give a presentation, except for members in Hawai'i and in other exceptional circumstances.
