Message from the SEMSCHC President

The Society for Ethnomusicology, Southern California and Hawai’i Chapter (SEMSCHC) will hold its 48th Annual Meeting on February 22-23, 2014, hosted by the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB).

For SEMSCHC 2014, Mary Talusan (LMU), the Program Committee, Scott Marcus (UCSB) and the Local Arrangements Committee have together prepared a thrilling schedule of paper sessions, roundtables and performances. On Saturday, lunch will be hosted courtesy of the UCSB Music Department, with musical accompaniment provided by the UCSB Afro-Brazilian Ensemble, directed by Matt Wright. On Saturday following the Business Meeting, the keynote address will be delivered by ethnomusicologist Ricardo D. Trimillos, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus of the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Conferees will have the choice to eat dinner on Saturday at a restaurant near UCSB or with Tim Cooley and Ruth Hellier-Tinoco (UCSB). They have invited all delegates to their home for BBQ (6:00-7:40pm}. Each conferee can either donate $5.00 or bring potluck food to share. Tim and Ruth said the grill will be fired up and BYOB. Come and enjoy their great ocean and mountain views. Their address: 6000 La Goleta Road, 93117 is only a ten-minute drive from campus. Please RSVP to Tim at cooley@music.ucsb.edu. Saturday night at 8pm in the MultiCultural Center Theater, the UCSB Middle East Ensemble is going to treat us to a free concert directed by Scott Marcus.

This year’s meeting will be bursting with the most cutting-edge and recent research by scholars in our region —graduate students and faculty. The 2014 conference will feature several important roundtables—one, featuring UCSB interdisciplinary professors and another comprised of leading ethnomusicologists from UCLA, and the screening of a film produced by an SEMSCHC member that was recently aired on national network television. More than thirty scholarly presentations have been programmed. These sessions will unfold throughout Saturday (Feb. 22) and continue on Sunday morning (Feb. 23). Sunday’s schedule will include more panels; a roundtable and a paper that will be presented live from Hawaii via Skype,

There will be a ‘Publications and Publicity’ table near the registration desk to advertise and share with fellow members your books and upcoming events, etc. Bring anything you want to share, but be sure to collect it at the end of the conference.

Registration fees are $15 for students and $25 for others. You may register today using PayPal at www.semschc.org.
