Welcome Message from the President
Society for Ethnomusicology, Southern California and Hawaii Chapter
Greetings,
On Saturday, February 23, 2013 we welcome you to the one-day Society for Ethnomusicology, Southern California and Hawai’i Chapter’s 47th Annual Meeting.
For the SEMSCHC 2013 meeting Ruth Hellier-Tinoco (UCSB), the Program Committee, Jonathan Ritter (UCR) and the Local Arrangements Committee have collaborated and prepared an exhilarating schedule of events that includes some delightful interactive originality. Instead of a formal concert on Saturday night, we will have an informal dinner and “open mic” with music performances by SEMSCHC members (5-10 minutes max). So, come prepared with your instruments to share your music making with all of us. You will be able to sign-up at the registration desk throughout the day for dinner and “open mic” participation.
The keynote address “Art and Politics, Ethnography and Texts: The Case of American Cinema” will be given by the esteemed anthropologist Sherry B. Ortner.
As you can probably tell, this year’s meeting is going to be so different that you do not want to miss it. There’s more. The program will include our very first Lightning Sessions. These are parallel 30-minute sessions that will feature six speakers who will each talk for four minutes about their current or recent scholarly projects. And, two full papers will be virtually presented from Hawaii.
For the first time, there will be a ‘Publications and Publicity’ table near the registration desk to advertise or share with fellow members your books and upcoming events, etc. Bring anything you want to share, but don’t forget that you must collect it at the end of the conference.
You can register today using PayPal at www.semschc.org. In addition to registering you can view the complete conference program.
Included on the website is a campus map, directions to UCR, parking instructions, lodging near UCR and information about crash space for graduate students coming from outside of the Riverside area.
This year’s papers and events promise a wonderful meeting. I think this will be our most exciting regional conference in a long time. I look forward to contributing to it with you.
